The Vermont State Police issued an annual public appeal today for any information about the unsolved slaying of Kenneth Jerome, a Sheldon farmhand who was shot sniper-style on the job in July 2005.

The killing on the Magnan Farm shocked the community and left Jerome’s infant daughter without a father. Despite rewards offered by the owners of the farm and other community members, the crime has remains unsolved. A $5,000 reward for information that leads to resolution or conviction in the case is still being offered, police say.

The 33-year-old Jerome was feeding calves in the middle of the day on the East Sheldon Road farm when he was shot, possibly from a hillside adjacent to the farmyard, police have said. He was discovered shortly thereafter. No witnesses have come forward, and no gun has been found.

In a statement Wednesday, state police Detective Sgt. Edward Meslin urged anyone with information about the crime to contact the authorities. There have been no recent developments and no new leads, but it’s police practice to send out reminders once a year seeking information about unsolved cases. The annual appeal in the Jerome case went out a few months late this year, Meslin said.

“We put it out to remind people,” he said. There’s always the chance a reminder will tweak someone’s memory or persuade someone to admit wrongdoing. “It might jolt a guilty conscience,” Meslin said.
