On the afternoon of June 8, 2012 a 44 year old woman was sexually assaulted and stabbed several times while hiking on the Gatlinburg Trail near the park entrance. It was later confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted and had received multiple stab wounds in the neck, shoulders, and hand. After the assault she was able to make her way to the Gatlinburg Bypass where she flagged down a passing motorist for assistance. She was flown to the University of Tennesssee Medical Center for treatment, and was released from their care that night.
National Park Special Agents are continuing the investigation, and working with the victim and a forensic artist they were able to create the above sketch of the suspect.
The suspect is described as:
White Male, thin build, wearing eyeglasses
Age: 40′s
Height: 5’9” – 5’10” tall
Hair: Dirty-Blond, Crew Cut
Clothing: Black Dress Pants and a Gray T-shirt (at the time of the attack)
Tatoos: Multiple tattoos, including on his shoulders and an unknown word across his abdomen
A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
