10-1-12 Update: NEW TAZEWELL — After more than two months of living in the woods, a former LaFollette police officer wanted on 44 counts of exploiting a minor surrendered this morning at his mother’s house in Claiborne County.
“He turned himself in to us at 2 a.m.,” said Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray.
Authorities said Michael Shane Baker contacted the TBI agent assigned to his case to surrender.

LAFOLLETTE, TN – A former LaFollette police officer indicted on 44 felony counts of child sex crimes has been added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Top Ten Most Wanted List. Comment: Come on Tennessee you can do better than offering just $1,000 for this violent Child Sex Offender!
The investigation of Michael Shane Baker, 39, began in Georgia several months ago.
Baker is accused of having inappropriate contact with an underage girl through the Internet, webcams and text messages between August and December 2011. The indictment says Baker allegedly got the girl to engage in sexual activity and simulated sexual activity.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation contacted the LaFollette Police Department about the case against Baker. Police then contacted the 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and the Knoxville Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
The Campbell County Grand Jury handed up the charges against Baker on July 11. They include 22 counts of especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor and 22 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.
Baker worked for the department from May 2010 until he was fired in June as a result of this investigation, according to LaFollette Police Chief Jimmy Jeffries.
Baker is believed to be living in the New Tazewell area. He’s wanted on a warrant with a $100,000 bond.
LaFollette police, the TBI and the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office all tried to find Baker last week without success.
Baker is described as bald with blue eyes. He’s 5’11″ and weighs approximately 220 pounds. The TBI says he may be armed.
There’s a $1,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
