A hefty $27,500 cash reward for information leading to the capture of Covington businessman Bruce Cucchiara’s killer is not just extra incentive for someone to come forward and turn a suspect in, according to the leader of the organization that offered up the money. It’s also a tribute to how beloved a member of his community 57-year-old Cucchiara was prior to his murder in eastern New Orleans on April 24, 2012. The reward expires on May 3, 2015.

Several of his family’s supporters donated the funds for the larger-than-usual reward, Crimestoppers Inc. of Greater New Orleans Executive Director Darlene Cusanza said during a news conference in Metairie. Cucchiara’s wife, Anne Soileau Cucchiara, added, “There’s no amount of money I can put on my husband’s life. He’s invaluable.” Read the rest of this entry »

On September 27, 2008, Kirsten Brydum of San Francisco became the 144th of 179 people murdered in New Orleans that year.
To Kirsten Brydum, a passionate 25-year-old community activist from San Francisco, one person’s junk was another’s treasure.
Brydum, who wanted to change the world, certainly changed Dolores Park. Because of her, there is something called the Really, Really Free Market. People bring their rummage to the park on the last Saturday of the month and give it away. Nobody gets any money and everyone walks away a little richer. That was how she liked it. You could make $25,000 if you can help police with an unsolved case. Who killed a Bywater woman two-years-ago? It’s what cops want to know, and they’re hoping a hiked up reward leads to answers…

Dozens of people want justice for Jessica: Jessica Hawk, a botanist from Ohio who moved to New Orleans after Katrina. She was found fatally stabbed in her Bywater home in August, two years ago.

“I miss her though, can’t tell you how much we miss her at home. She’s like my little sister,” said Hawk’s aunt Denita Shedden.

Hawk’s family is here because a lot of money was raised by the community to help find Hawk’s killer or killers. The Crimestoppers reward announced is now at $25,000.

“Please, on behalf of everybody here, the community, the family, the friends, help us find justice for Jessica,” said Glenn Hayes, who’s on the Crimestoppers Board.

Hawk’s family is hoping this reward will blossom into some more tips for this cold case.

“We’re just hoping for one thing, you know, just one sign. There could be a hundred people calling but we’re just looking for that one solid sign,” said the victim’s brother, Brandon Hawk.

The $25,000 reward increase is just one way people want to remember Jessica Hawk. The other is a memorial garden planted a year ago.

“We aren’t gonna rest until it’s closed,” said Lee Horvitz, Jessica Hawk’s former boyfriend.

Loved ones first planted a tree which was followed by the garden to keep her memory alive.

They released butterflies for Jessica. They hope this reward will release new information in her case.

If the case stays cold, friends of Jessica Hawk say they might hire an independent forensic pathologist to investigate.
