PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The family of a man gunned down outside a Providence car wash are now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspected killer’s capture.
On Saturday, June 2, 2012 Ivan Taveras, 32, of Providence, was seen fighting with Jovani Torres, 31, outside Ivan’s Car Wash, at 559 Cranston St., when Torres shot him to death, according to the police. They were not strangers and knew each other.
Taveras’ 5-year-old son often shadowed his father at the car wash, said Nelson Garcia, who owns Garcia Auto Accessories and rented the car-wash bay to Taveras. But this time, the boy was running around and didn’t witness the fight that killed his father, Garcia said.
The fight and Taveras’ slaying were caught on store surveillance cameras.
Both Ivan Taveras and the man accused of killing him have criminal records.
Torres was previously convicted of drug trafficking and being a felon in possession of a firearm, for which he’d been sentenced to federal prison.
Taveras was a convicted murderer, who served five years after shooting and killing a man at 16. He was released at age 21, and two years later, was charged with kidnapping his girlfriend. He later was convicted of carjacking her.
