PHILADELPHIA – July 7, 2012 — It was a bit more than a month when a beloved SEPTA Trolley Operator was ruthlessly murdered, and the case remains unsolved.
The victim’s co-workers have stepped up hoping to get some justice for their fallen friend.
“Aaron was an amazing, amazing guy,” said co-worker Avignon Dent. “There’s not a bad thing that anyone could say about Aaron.”
That’s how Avignon Dent felt about her co-worker Aaron Hayes. The 52-year-old worked as a Septa trolley operator for the past 27 years.
“He was a great leader. He was a very, very positive influence on young folks,” said Dent.
Early Thursday morning, May 31st, 2012 Aaron was preparing to head to work, when police say he was ambushed.
A gunman shot him several times in his driveway on the 7100 block of Elmwood Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia.
Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives said Aaron Hayes was shot in the head, neck, and one arm just before 5 a.m. outside his home on the 7100 block of Elmwood Avenue in the Eastwick section, police said.
He was rushed to the hospital but died later of his injuries.
“The news of this was absolutely shocking,” said Dent.
A passing trolley driver told police he saw a white man run down the block to a waiting black and gray Mitsubishi with a woman behind the wheel.
Police are review surveillance video from several cameras on the block.
His co-workers have stepped up to offer a reward.
“We felt one of the best things we could do to support Aaron and ourselves is to get this reward money together and beg people to come forth with information to bring these people to justice,” Dent said.
The Citizens Crime Commission is administering a $1,234 reward, and the city of Philadelphia is offering up to $20,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
