PORTLAND, Ore. — A cash reward has been increased to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in the slaying of federal public defender Nancy Bergeson, found strangled in her Portland home just before Thanksgiving, 2009.
Since Nancy’s murder, detectives have concluded that Nancy was murdered sometime between 8 p.m. on the night of Nov. 23, 2009, and 10 a.m. the following day.
For the weeks leading up to her murder, Nancy had been defending a man named Marcel Bendshadler on tax fraud charges. He was found guilty at 10 a.m. on the morning of Nov. 23.
That night, Nancy left work and went to out to dinner with friends before retiring for the evening back at home.
The next morning a girl who stopped by daily to walk Nancy’s golden retriever saw the 57-year-old woman through a front window and contacted a neighbor.
The Portland Police Bureau announced the increased reward in cooperation with Crime Stoppers.
Portland Police said the FBI assigned an agent to monitor the investigation in case a link was found between the homicide and her role as federal defense attorney.
Detective Sgt. Paul Weatheroy says details are being withheld to protect the investigation but police are devoting considerable resources to the case.
Weatheroy and Bergeson’s daughter Jamie also asked the public for help in the investigation in early December. The reward at that time was $1,000.
The death of the 57-year-old lawyer was first believed to be from natural causes until an autopsy showed she had been strangled.
