The Richmond County (NC) Sheriff’s Office recently received a proclamation from Governor Beverly Perdue announcing an additional $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the murder of Hoffman resident Michael Lee Newby.
Newby, 50, was discovered by the railroad tracks just off of Rushing Road in Hoffman back in late November 2011. His death was the result of being shot multiple times by an offender who still remains unknown, according to authorities.
In the two-page proclamation, signed on Jan. 13, Governor Perdue wrote that “the person or persons who committed such an infamous crime must be brought to justice.”
The proclamation continues, “I, Beverly Perdue, Governor of the State of North Carolina, under and by virtue of the authority contained in N.C.G.S. 15-53.1, do hereby offer a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Michael Lee Newby.
“The payment of this reward or any portion thereof is conditional upon the information being furnished as a direct result of the issuance of this proclamation. The total reward paid to all persons shall not exceed $5,000.”
Governor Perdue added that the reward does not extend to any law enforcement officer of the state or political subdivision.
Also in the proclamation, the governor wrote, “Mr. Newby worked every day but was called homeless. He had not been robbed or assaulted in any other way. It appears that he was shot without reason.”
The new $5,000 reward is in addition to a $500 reward offered by Barry Bostick of Bostick BP in Hoffman, rewards through CrimeStoppers and the Sheriff’s Office, and an anonymous reward of $1,000.
