WESTVILLE, N.Y. – Ten years later, the murder of his sister still bring tears to Herb Healey’s eyes.
“She was a special lady,” he said as he wiped tears from his face.
Marie Fleury was beaten to death inside her home in Westville.
“It was not a random act. They went there for a reason and things went wrong. Nobody was trying to cause harm that day, they went there trying to steal something and didn’t think Marie was home,” said New York State Police Investigator Kurt Taylor.
A decade later, no one has been charged with killing the 64-year-old nurse.
“It definitely gets frustrating,” Healey said.
He and his brother were among the more than 50 people who packed the Westville Fire House on the ten year anniversary of Fleury’s murder. Each year, state police investigators meet with the public to update them on the investigation.
“I have never gotten over it. Every year I cry, every year I think about her,” said Audrey McElwain, who was friends with Fleury.
While the case may be ten years in the works, investigators say it is anything but cold.
“I got a new lead today. I got a new lead last week,” Taylor told the crowd.
Police say the reason this case has been a challenge is that there were no eyewitnesses, making it tough to tie physical evidence at the scene to the killer, or killers. But their focus is on burglary suspects in the region over the past decade. Prosecutors say some of those suspects are already in jail. “We are looking at a small, select group of individuals as being responsible for this homicide,” Taylor said.
While frustrated at times, Herb Healey is quick to thank the state police for their dedication to the case and the community, by holding annual meetinging to keep the case in the spotlight and ensure it gets solved. “It doesn’t bring her back, but hopefully one day soon, they’ll bring whoever done it to justice,” he said.
Police would like to remind the public a $16,000 reward is being offered for information that helps investigators solve the murder of Marie Fleury.
