You could get up to $5,000 for just a name. Sarpy County, Nebraska Crime Stoppers is offering that reward for the identity of a murder victim.
The unidentified man found in a burning field near 231st Street and Highway 6 on September 24th didn’t die there and a unique, expensive Australian-design jacket might be a clue to the savage and mysterious crime.
“We don’t know if it’s the victim’s or the suspect’s,” says Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis. “This particular item was wrapped around the victim’s head and then wired.” Wire also bound his feet. He had been killed elsewhere by blunt trauma and other injuries investigators won’t disclose. Evidence indicates a local tie, so the victim or killers may not have been passing through.
The killer or killers wanted to destroy all the evidence. A bundle of clothing wrapped in wire lay next to the body and both body and clothing were doused with gasoline and set on fire. Flames spotted and doused soon after preserved evidence. Clothing, along with a rosary around the victim’s neck, is being tested for DNA that investigators hope will identify the victim or killer.
“All this evidence we’re showing right now, if pieced together in someone else’s mind who may know the victim or suspects, would make sense to them,” said Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Brian Richards.
The department continue to work on only the second unsolved homicide investigated by the Sarpy County sheriff in the past 40 years. “It’s a little bit frustrating and time consuming,” admitted Sheriff Davis. Solving a murder is difficult when they can’t identify the victim.
Someone that morning saw two vehicles leaving the field, a silver SUV and a compact car.
