SHERMAN OAKS – A $50,000 reward is now available for information leading to a conviction in the shooting death of a 38-year-old cook and father of five at the Sherman Oaks restaurant where he worked.
Raul Lopez was fatally shot in the chest shortly after 11 p.m. June 29, 2012 at Hoagies & Wings, 14552 Ventura Blvd., as he tried to repel a group of about five young men who were causing a disturbance, according to Los Angeles police.
The suspects directed racial epithets at restaurant employees, driving customers from the restaurant and prompting Lopez to confront them, according to the Los Angeles Times.
After the shooting, the suspects — all men in their 20s or 30s — fled in a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Cadillac Escalade. Three of the suspects were large men: about 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 300 pounds or more.
Lopez is survived by his wife, Guadalupe Gomez; two sons ages 16 and 7; and three daughters ages 6, 4, and 2.
The restaurant has set up a donation fund for the family. Checks should be made payable to Guadalupe Gomez and may be mailed to Hoagies &Wings, attn: Guadalupe Gomez, 14552 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks CA 91403. Checks can also be dropped off there. To donate clothing, or for further information, email the restaurant at info@hoagiesandwings.com, or visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/hoagiesandwings.
The reward is being offered by the City Council for information that leads to the identification, arrest and conviction of the suspects.
